Chapter 14

Curiosity is the wick in the candle of learning.

William Arthur Ward

Cold Hard Facts

Quinn walked in the kitchen and her personal phone buzzed. There was a text: Will monitor snow for clearing your driveway. She smiled. A crucial consideration for law enforcement folks in these mountains to be able to get out in bad weather. She had used the same company for ten years to plow for her and they had always kept her driveway and sidewalk cleared. She sent a simple: Thank you.

She touched Billy’s number on her recent calls list.

“In out of the cold?” His voice was sincere and the warmth radiated through her.

“I am. And, you sir?”

“Still at the station, but headed home shortly. Things are pretty quiet on this side of the mountains.”

“I’m sure you and Chad are relieved about that. Speaking of Chad, how are things with your sheriff?”

“Good. So far he’s living up to his pledge to actually have a normal life and have us work as a team. Of course it means one or two folks have had to step up their game.”

“Wouldn’t be anyone I know, that’s for sure. You were already a pretty amazing team. One I’d like to emulate.”

“Enough shop talk, Detective. Tell me about my favorite lead detective. Anything new in your world?”

She wanted to tell him about Buddy—not as a detective, but as a friend—someone she’d like to become a very good friend—but she let it go. “Not work related, but for sure about your relative. Now how is it that Matthew is related to you?”

“Second cousin twice removed or some such nonsense. Close enough since we both live in these hills and we know and like each other, but mostly relative when we have family reunions.”

She laughed. “Fair enough. Matthew was prompt, courteous, and efficient. Thanks for the recommendation, and I now have his number of speed dial.”

“Is mine?” He said it playfully but with sincere hope.

“First one.”

“Good.”

Just to give him back his normal banter, she chuckled, “You don’t think I’d call anyone else if my life was in danger, do you?”

“Ha! Ha! Speaking of whom you might call. Have you looked at this storm?”

“Not yet. Big one?”

“May make roads hard to navigate for a couple of days. We don’t usually get a heavy snow like this in January.”

“I know. Usually happens when the moisture starts to increase as spring comes in. I haven’t called my Mother yet to tell her you said you’d come, so I may just tell her we can’t.”

“Whoa, don’t make it about me. I’ll get out my snowmobile and pick you up and we can travel in style.”

She loved that he made her laugh. “I think we could just use the snowmobiles down here instead of trying to go to the city. What do you think?”

“I think you’ll tell your mother that I said I’d be delighted to see her anytime, and I’ll leave it to your judgment about whether one of those times should be Saturday.”

“Very gallant of you.” She sighed.
